From August 28, 2001, the Consortium for the protection of Vastedda della Valle del Belìce PDO, by decree of MIPAAF charged under Law 12/21/1999 n.526, protects the historical and cultural heritage and the manufacturing of Belìce valley.
The consortium was promoted by Sicilian Regional Farmers, the zootechnical institute, Faculty of Agriculture of Palermo, Provincia Regionale di Agrigento, Provincia Regionale di Trapani, the Professional Agricultural Organisations and the municipalities of Santa Margherita Belice "Sambuca di Sicilia, Menfi, Sciacca, Partanna and Castelvetrano, where the delicious sheep's milk cheese is produced.

Since its inception, the consortium brings together the holders of belìce's tradition, carrying out its mission pointing to the protection and enhancement of precious spun paste cheese made from sheep milk.
There are several events dedicated to Vastedda della valle del Bel'ce, numerous are the initiatives supported by the consortium.
The major award obtained by the consortium was, no doubt, the inclusion of the Vastedda della valle del Belìce in the list of cheeses with Protected Designation of Origin.

One tool available for the consortium is surely the support given by the European Union and the region of Sicily through the specific development programs.
The Regional Department of Agriculture and Forestry of Sicily has deployed the Rural Development Programme (RDP) Sicily 2007-2013 approved by the European Commission decision No. EC (2008) 735 of 18.2.2008.
Among the measures envisaged by the regional RDP, there is the 133 MEASURE that supports the producer groups through information and promotion campaigns for quality agricultural products.
The primary goal of the measure is precisely the increase of agricultural productions protected under quality systems, through their enhancement on the market and towards consumers.
