The consortium 'Vastedda della Valle del Belìce'
From August 28, 2001, the Consortium Vastedda della valle del Belìce cheese, by decree of MIPAAF charged under Law 12/21/1999 n.526, protects the historical and cultural heritage and the manufacturing of Belìce valley. The consortium was promoted by Sicilian Regional Farmers, the zootechnical institute, Faculty of Agriculture of Palermo, Provincia Regionale di Agrigento, Provincia Regionale di Trapani, the Professional Agricultural Organisations and the municipalities of Santa Margherita Belice "Sambuca di Sicilia, Menfi, Sciacca, Partanna and Castelvetrano, where the delicious sheep's milk cheese is produced.

The "Vastedda della Valle del Belìce" obtained the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) by the European Union, whose regulation was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 29 October 2010. This recognition is reserved for products for which the chain is closely linked to the territory of origin. In fact, the Vastedda, though little known, is deeply ingrained in the tradition of Valle del Belìce dairy "(production area enclosed between the provinces of Agrigento, Palermo and Trapani).

The consortium includes the holders of intellectual property right awarded by PDO registration, its aim is protect and enhance the designation of origin.
With the next MIPAAF acknowledgment by the Ministry of Agriculture, the consortium will also run a monitoring task to preserve the PDO brand as provided for Regulations and the Controls Plan.
